Sparring with Words free essay sample

A man and a lady are trapped in a clash of words. The lady focuses fingers and reprimands her partner for something he might have done, yelling and shouting resentful slurs. The man, in safeguard, dispatches his own assault, reviling and tossing around any word he can consider, planning to hurt. The couple’s words scratch and cut each other like the sharp edges of blades, conflicting and clanking in mid-fight. At long last, the battle isn't won; neither one of the warriors remains as the victor. Rather, all that is left is a wicked chaos on the ground. Our words are our most prominent weapons. They are the cutting edges that we push into each other, causing torment and outrage as a response. The scene simply depicted is one that has been reproduced on various events with companions, sweethearts, relatives, and that irregular bystander in the city. Since every individual is totally special, built of contrasting perspectives and thoughts on acceptable behavior, we tend to contend. Since this is unrealistic, every individual acting his own, we lose our tempers over the littlest detail. We at that point gruffly call attention to with our not really unpolished weapons the goof the individual has submitted. These conditions now and again grow into fighting matches, where we are compelled to guard ourselves with blade and shield. The wounds we give and get are so slicing to us since they are made out of honest components about ourselves that we would prefer not recognize. Our words are purposeful, so during these occasions they can be malevolent and tragic, injuring our expected rival. Developed in the energy of the contention, we don’t even notification the profundities our blades have entered. My words have been known to deliver wounds upon others. A case of this was the point at which my companion Madison succumbed to my sharp weapons once during my sophomore year of secondary school. She had been an old buddy for quite a while, however it appeared she possibly was found next to me when she required a person or thing. This happened persistently, until I at long last supported myself, pestered by her conflicting and egotistical disposition. She tumbled down close to me one day during noon, showing up wide-looked at and lost. She was longing for a type of solace for the sole explanation that all her different companions had left for the afternoon. I opened my mouth and released a plenty of knifes, thumping down the entirety of her protections. Everything I did was call attention to reality in what she was doing to me, but since it was something contrary to what she expected to hear, tears tumbled from her eyes, stunned by how hurtful my words had become. Her endeavor to har m me consequently was weak, best case scenario, considering I had just injured her past all fix. Since our battle, our companionship has never been the equivalent. We talk once in a while, yet in no way like we used to. I downplay my words inspired by a paranoid fear of how they may show up. Every articulation holds so much force in light of the fact that relying upon how we talk, our words can come out as scornful, furious, adoring, or unbiased. Just we have the authority over the indication of our words, similarly as we direct the force in the push of a blade. The language we specialty can be similarly as harmful as the penetrate from such a weapon. Since our words have â€Å"life-undermining consequences,† it is ideal to screen what we state. Our verbal swordfights slice through us similarly as profound, if not more profound, than the sharp metal tips we warriors convey.

Mostly the receivership procedures begin on basis fixed charge (Munnery, 2017). If nothing of this sort is mentioned in the contract than the lender would have to issue a demand notice for payment. And thus when this notice does not fetch the appropriate returns than the lender has the authority to assign receiver (Companies Office, 2015). Human Capital Planning Source: https://lh4.ggpht.com/_TxjmrWH7LYs/SxL-pIIJZsI/AAAAAAAACXU/Pgi0fiDeTNE/InfoHRMWFPprocess1.png?imgmax=800 The human resource literature does consist of various approaches and models which elaborate how the human resource can be used as a good human resource practice and process (Human Resources management, 2005). The values do highlight the importance of basic issues and how strategic approach is important during the company's receivership. The HRs duty is to give sufficient amount of attention to the companys pending human resource issues. The HR must stay intact in resolving the issues and should not deviate from the goal by being optimistic (Baird and Meshoulam, 1988). Compensation Benefits The most important aspect of any organization is its employees. But the employees are the ones who tends to get scapegoats whenever the company goes into receivership or bankruptcy. During this period the employees are under the risk that they would get their due salaries or even if they get it would take quite an amount of time to recover those payments (Protection of employees, 2017). As an HR manager, it is my sole duty to confer these issues to the new owner so that they can be resolved quickly. The employees need to be given the status of priority creditor during this phase (Cornell et al., 2009). The employees always need to get special protection during the period of receivership. It is my duty to see that the persons who lost their job and to be precise livelihood during this period must get compensation and protected as guided out by the judiciary (Workers Compensation Administration, 2017). Learning and Development Source: https://thehrmetrics.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/11.png The development in the framework of Human resource management is helping the employees to cope up and develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities of both personal as well as organizational skills (Wilson, 1999). As an HR it is my key responsibility to look into the development of the employee career, training of the employees, development and performance management, planning succession and also mentoring (Human Resource Development, 2017). Hiring The company needs to alter the workforce to have respective benefits from the employees (Employment and Labor Concerns during Bankruptcy and Restructuring, 2010). The companys cost structure needs extra attention during restructuring (Debtors Guide to Bankruptcy, 2014). The new management should look into possible chances of out of court settlement for the resolution of the labors to avoid any complications which may arise if the employees do file for bankruptcy (The Hiring Process, 2017). The Grapes of Wrath Importance of the Title

'The Grapes of Wrath Importance of the Title The Grapes of Wrath, a Pulitzer-prize winning book written by John Steinbeck and published in 1939, tells the story of   the  Joads, a poor family of  tenant farmers driven out of Depression-era Oklahoma also referred to as Oakies by drought and economic factors, who migrate to Californa in search of a better life. Steinbeck had trouble coming up with the title for the novel, a classic in American literature, and his wife actually suggested using the phrase. From Bible to Battle Hymn The title, itself, is a reference to lyrics from The Battle Hymn of the Republic, written in 1861 by  Julia Ward Howe, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1862: Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:His truth is marching on. The words have some important resonance in American culture. For example, Martin Luther King Jr, in his  address  at the conclusion of the Selma-to-Montgomery, Alabama, civil rights march in 1965, quoted these very words  from  the hymn.  The lyrics, in turn, reference a biblical  passage in  Revelations 14:19-20, where the evil inhabitants of Earth perish:    And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great wine press of the wrath of God.  And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the wine press, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. In the Book The phrase grapes of wrath does not appear almost until the end of the 465-page novel: In the souls of the people, the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage. According to eNotes; The oppressed such as the Okies are ripening in their understanding of their oppression. The fruit of their anger is ready to be harvested. In other words, you can push the downtrodden so far, but eventually, there will be a  price to pay. In all of these references from the tribulations of  Joads, to the battle hymn, the biblical passage and Kings speech the key point is that in response to any oppression, there will be a reckoning, likely ordained by God, and that rightness and justice will prevail. Free Essays on Computer Viruses

Computer Viruses A computer virus is an illegal and potentially damaging computer program designed to infect other software by attaching itself to any software it contacts. In many cases, virus programs are designed to damage computer systems maliciously by destroying or corrupting data. If the infected software is transferred to or accessed by another computer system, the virus spreads to the other system. Viruses have become a serious problem in recent years, and currently, thousands of known virus programs exist (Reed 85-102). Three types of viruses are boot sector virus, file virus, and Trojan horse virus. A boot sector virus infects the boot program used to start the system. When the infected boot program executes, the virus is loaded into the computers memory. Once a virus is in a memory, it can spread to any floppy disk inserted into the computer. A file virus inserts virus code into program files. The virus then spreads to any program that accesses the infected file. A Trojan horse virus (named after a Greek myth) hides within or is designed to look like a legitimate program. Some viruses interrupt processing by freezing a computer system temporarily and then displaying sounds or messages. Other viruses contain time bombs or logic bombs. A time bomb is a program that performs an activity on a particular date. A logic bomb is a program that performs an activity when a certain action occurs, such as an employee being terminated. A worm, which is similar to a virus, copies itself repeatedly until no memory or disc space remains. To detect computer viruses, antivirus programs have been developed. Besides detecting viruses, antivirus programs also have utilities to remove or repair infected programs and files. Some damaged files cannot be repaired and must be replaced with uninfected backup files. The table below outlines some techniques used to protect computer systems. This growth however, has not come without a price. With the advent of the "Information Highway", as it's coined, a new methodology in crime has been created. Electronic crime has been responsible for some of the most financially devastating victimizations in society. In the recent past, society has seen malicious editing of the Justice Department web page (1), unauthorized access into classified government computer files, phone card and credit card fraud, and electronic embezzlement. All these crimes are committed in the name of "free speech." These new breed of criminals claim that information should not be suppressed or protected and that the crimes they commit are really not crimes at all. What they choose to deny is that the nature of their actions are slowly consuming the fabric of our country's moral and ethical trust in the information age. Federal law enforcement agencies, as well as commercial computer companies, have been scrambling around in an attempt to "educate" the public on how to prevent computer crime from happening to them. They inform us whenever there is an attack, provide us with mostly ineffective anti-virus software, and we are left feeling isolated and vulnerable. I do not feel that this defensive posture is effective because it is not pro-active. Society is still being attacked by highly skilled computer criminals of which we know very little about them, their motives, and their tools of the trade. Therefore, to be effective in defense, we must understand how these attacks take place from a technical stand-point. To some degree, we must learn to become a computer criminal. Then we will be in a better position to defend against these victimizations that affect us on both the financial and emotional level. In this paper, we will explore these areas of which we know so little, and will also see that comp uters are really extensions ...

Can you make up a topic for me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Can you make up a topic for me - Essay Example times still carries out illicit affairs but they are done secretly and the wife may never be aware of what is happening and when a discovery is made, it completely shatters the marriage. In this type of marriage just like in a polygamous one, the woman is still the one to suffer and do it alone as she is expected to remain faithful. Engels does not see anything wrong with such an arrangement which I also disagree with as it is not only unreasonable but it disregards the woman’s sexuality as well downplaying it to no importance at all. The question heavy in my mind is whether monogamous marriages are really worth it if the men are still picking up the polygamous culture but doing it secretly (Engels 2004). I agree with the explanations Yuval-Davis provides about how women and their decision making ability even on their own reproduction is denied to them. They are made to listen to the policies being made and follow the directives given to them but not to complain. Women are not given a choice when it comes to their reproductive system as they are forced to have babies to continue the bloodline, fill a nation or even for social status. In cases where Malthusian theory is being practiced, the female children born or unborn are killed and only the male survive and this is decided by the man and not the woman. Women simply have no powers whether it is productive or reproductive roles and they are simply like automatons controlled by the men and made to do what the men want and this is absolutely unfair (Yuval-Davis 1997). I agree that the society has continually put pressure on women to agree with them about each and everything concerning their lives and have even moved to their reproductive life. Reproduction is the one thing that is and should remain private in a woman’s life and she should therefore hold all the reins when it comes to decisions about her reproductive health. She should be the one to make decisions about whether she wants a child or not and

How Shakespeare Presents Helena Essay Example for Free

How Shakespeare Presents Helena Essay Helena is clearly longing for something to make her like Hermia in hope that Demetrius would see some of Hermia in her. She is also jealous of Hermia’s beauty. It also shows us that she is insecure about her own appearance. The audience would’ve felt sorry towards her at this point as she is clearly devastated about Demetrius. A bit more into the play Helena expresses her confusion and betrayal towards Demetrius. â€Å"For ere Demetrius looked on Hermia’s eyne, / He hail’d down oaths that he was only mine. / And when this hail some heat from Hermia felt,/ So he dissolv’d, and showers of oaths did melt. In this metaphor Helena is saying that Demetrius had made so many promises to her like balls of ice (hail stones) but when Hermia came along he made broke them causing Demetrius’s promises to have melted. We feel sympathetic towards Hermia as Demetrius led Helena on, making all of these promises when only later he would break all of them. Desperation is shown when Helena tells Demetrius about Hermia and Lysander’s plan to run away, betraying Hermia in the process. She is so desperate that she betrayed her best friend, Hermia. It was a bit hypocritical of her to betray Hermia and endangering their friendship like that when later on she accuses Hermia of throwing away their friendship when actually Hermia was stating the truth. â€Å"But herein mean I enrich my pain, / To have his slight thither, and back again. † In this quote it shows that Helena has come to the conclusion that Demetrius would never love her. So she would betray her best friend to just be pleased with by Demetrius but this doesn’t seem the case when you read later on in the play that Demetrius gets even more irritated with Helena. Helena is basically saying that even though it would pain her to see Demetrius chasing after Hermia she would still do it. At this moment the audience would’ve felt annoyed and sympathetic. The audience annoyed at Helena because she had ruined her best friend’s plan just to help her in her love life. This would be considered as selfish. However we would be sympathetic towards her as she has completely given up on being loved by Demetrius. However when her wishes are finally granted she doesn’t believe it creating a huge argument: â€Å"Wherefore was I to this keen mockery born? When at your hands did I deserve this scorn? † At this point Helena lets out all the insecurities, anger and sadness she’s ever been feeling. Her life for the last couple of months has been an emotional rollercoaster. â€Å"Is’t not enough, is’t enough, young man, / That I did never, no, nor never can/ Deserve a sweet look from Demetrius’ eye/ But you mu st flout my insufficiency? † The repetition that she uses suggests that she is so angry at Demetrius that she repeats her words; she’s so angry that she cannot think straight. The whole reason she’s angry is that she thinks that they are mocking her as Helena cannot believe anyone could possibly love her as she is so used to being rejected. If Demetrius couldn’t love her, who would? Her low self esteem also appears into her passage and her words. Helena feels confused at how anyone could ever like her and most of all outraged that her friends would mock and make fun of her. The audience feel humoured at this situation as Helena is claiming that Lysander and Demetrius don’t love her when actually they are in love with her to the point of madness. We also feel sorry towards her as she sees herself as a reject. At the end, when the confusion is solved and Helena finally has Demetrius she says some final words. â€Å"So methinks; / And I have found Demetrius, like a jewel, / Mine own, and not mine own. † In this metaphor she compares Demetrius to a jewel like she had been digging for a diamond and had finally found it. It shows how much Helena values Demetrius. At this point she finally realises that Demetrius actually does love her. At this point the udience would be feeling happy for Helena as she’s finally cheerful. However they might think that Demetrius doesn’t actually deserve Helena. In conclusion, Helena is showed as a heartbroken and desperate girl at the beginning then at the end she seems happy. The audience experience a range of emotions towards her, including sympathy, irritation and happiness. At the end of the play, we are likely to feel happy and satisfied because she finally has what she wan ts. Also throughout the whole play she is always depressed, sad or scolding herself.

A Balanced Budget? :: essays research papers fc

A Balanced Budget? This year President Clinton will submit his proposed legislation for the Federal Budget to Congress. The fact that we have divided government (ex., Democratic President, Republican majority in Congress) means the majority of that legislation won't make it through the first ten minutes of a Congressional session. The President in turn will veto legislation presented to him by Congress. The whole situation is a vicious, never ending circle. Each side is looking out for their own best interests, and after years, even decades of this the United States has a huge budget deficit. Is there a solution to all this madness? Is it feasible to balance the Federal Budget? Every politician on Capitol Hill claims to have the answer. The Federal Government goes as far to employ some of the most renowned economist's in the world to try to solve the deficit mess, and they still haven't figured it out. The budget simulation exercise by The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget provided choices Congress has to use as its guide for the upcoming year. How hard can it be to balance the budget I thought? After doing the exercised I realized the title of the simulation exercise, "The FY 1997 Budget: An Exercise in Hard Choices," could not have been more appropriate. It is possible though to balance the Federal Budget, provided you follow 3 simple rules. First you must decide what you feel is important, then cut without consciousness, and if that doesn't work, alter your baseline. Important Choices When deciding on what I thought was important to protect in the budget, I felt like a politician myself. I protected my own self interests. First up was Defense. The fact that I am in the Marine Officer Program weighed heavily on my decision to increase Defense spending by 17.6 billion (all amounts in billions, unless noted), following the Congressional Budget Resolution. The President's plan just didn't provide enough capital, the Congressional Black Caucus/Progressive Caucus would basically wipe out my career before it even starts, and I just can not have that. Next up is Education. Without the direct student loan program, I would have no way to fund my education other than going to some bank and going through the demeaning process of begging a loan officer to lend me money for school. I feel a sense of loyalty to the President on this issue, because without this program I would still be doing concrete construction back home in Indiana. As a result, I voted to increase Educational spending 33.4.My other concern or problem area is Administration of Justice.

Life in Navy Boot Camp Essay

It was a warm summer evening as I packed for Navy Boot Camp. I carefully went down the list of things I could take and ensured I didn’t have anything else. A little nervous I went to talk to my parents about my move to becoming my own man. I looked at their faces and could tell that although they were proud they were a little nervous about their only son leaving home for the first time. My mom tried to smile but she was proud yet nervous because I had always been her little guy so she was having a hard time letting go. After a short conversation with my parents I decided to try and rest for the long journey ahead. Its now 5 o’clock in the morning and I’m up to shower and get ready for the trip, I didn’t sleep very much because I was so nervous. I showed and got ready for the trip to the Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) for my final swearing in. My first trip included my initial processing and medical screening and now it was time to put all that into action. As my parent drove me to the station the car was very quiet. As we pulled up my parents got out and hugged me and wish me well. I walked in and looked back at them and it was like the cord was being cut between us, now it was time for me to make them proud and show them what I’d learned from them. The officer swore us in and we all boarded the bus starring out the window like lost kids. Hours later we arrived at Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Michigan. As we pulled up Company Commanders ran out yelling and screaming at us to put all our stuff in one hand and line up on the footprints. My heart was beating super fast and I was like what have I done. We marched into this room where they asked us to take out all our stuff, they went through it and told us what we could keep and what had to be sent home. After feeding us, they took everyone to the barber shop and shaved all our heads. They then issued us our initial uniforms and began indoctrination. After marching back to our dorms, we were told how the bed should be made, stenciled all our gear, showered and went to bed. The first night I can honestly say I missed my folks and at one point wanted to cry but I pushed on. I knew I had to do this for me and them, I had to show myself first and them second that I had what it took to make it. Day two and forward we woke up at 4 am with yelling and screaming that we had 15 minutes to shower, shave and get in line for physical training and breakfast. Everything was 15 to 20 minutes including eating; you learn to eat real quickly. Training was tough but as the weeks went on it got easier. Then around week 4 we had to swim, I was never a strong swimmer so I was nervous but I made it through. Around week five it seemed they got a little easier and then explained that the toughness was to help us rely on each other and build the necessary teamwork within us all. As time went on we had learned the entire Chain of Command, proper Navy rules and how to properly wear all the uniforms and the seasonal changes for whites and blues. As the 8th week came we got ready for graduation. Everyone was ready to show their parents how much they had grown up in the last two months. Part of growing up was proper grooming, making our beds and being responsible and accountable for each other. Some of the guys in my company sat around the night before talking about some of the hard times in boot camp. I talked about the hard part for me was the fire fighting training and taking off that gas mask, my eyes burned so bad and I coughed like I was going to die. We laughed so hard about that and having to jump off that diving board that seems like it was 100 stories tall. So now its graduation day and I’m so excited to see my parents and so they can see how I’ve turned from their little boy to this young man. We march out on the field and the guide yells â€Å"eyes right† and I look over and see my parents. My mom was crying as usual and my dad had the biggest smile on his face, it was a time I will always remember. Their little guy was finally a man.

Finally, the last battle Beowulf fought was a dragon. The dragon had many treasures in a cave, and while the dragon was asleep a slave stole a cup full of gold from the dragon, because he had ran away from his owner. The man did not want to die, so he gave his owner the gold cup so he would not kill him. The dragon was mad the slave stole treasure from him and he wanted to get it back. Beowulf said he was going to fight the dragon alone like all his other battles because he won all his other battles alone therefore he believes he can win this one too. Beowulf takes fourteen warriors with him. Beowulfs shield melted with the dragons flame. Then Beowulf stabbed the dragon and the dragon bit Beowulf in the neck. Wiglaf realizes Beowulf is getting beaten, so he goes and helps Beowulf by stabbing the dragon in the belly, and Beowulf cuts the dragon in half. In this battel, Beowulf proved his loyalty in being king and having a title of a hero. Beowulf is a hero in this book because he showed his strengths when he fought Grendel first, then Grendels mom, finally when he fought the dragon. He always showed he would not back down from a battle whether it was easy or hard. Everyone said he was a hero because he helped everyone with their problems. While he was king, his warriors never had to fight in a single battle because Beowulf would never let anything bad happened to his own town and neighbors. In this whole story it shows how Beowulf becomes a hero more in each battle he fought he showed his bravery, loyalty, honor, his physical strength, and that he is willing to risk his life for other people. He showed more in each battle he is the hero of the book.
